We stand with BC teachers

The BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) has launched a new ad campaign ahead of the provincial election to spotlight BC’s worsening teacher shortage and demand urgent government action. The campaign, titled Hire More Teachers, features TV and digital ads showing the real impact on students and calls for a fully funded workforce strategy similar to health care.

The BCTF criticises all political parties for failing to present serious solutions so far—and warns that the BC Conservatives’ plan to increase class sizes shows “gross ignorance” of student needs and the 2016 Supreme Court ruling that protected class size limits.

Teachers are overburdened, and the public needs to understand how staff shortages harm students. The BCTF has sent every major party a deliverable recruitment and retention plan and urges bold leadership to invest in public education and the future of BC’s children.

We stand with BC teachers.

The teacher shortage is a crisis—for learning, for inclusion, and for every child who needs care, consistency, and connection at school.

Educators are being asked to carry more than is humanly possible: to differentiate instruction, support diverse needs, manage dysregulated classrooms, and keep every child safe—without enough colleagues, without prep time, without the resources their students deserve.

At End Collective Punishment, we see the consequences of understaffing every day. When there aren’t enough adults to support children with disabilities, schools resort to collective punishment, restriction, and withdrawal. They deny accommodations. They remove children from class. They blame families instead of fixing broken systems.

We believe in classrooms where every student has the support they need, and every teacher has the time, training, and backup to offer it. That’s why we support the BC Teachers’ Federation in their call for a fully funded workforce strategy.
